We cycled a very pleasant 27km from Trinidad to Yaguanabo, then hopped a ride for the remaining 53km west to Cienfuegos.
The road was narrow and quiet, running often within sight of the Caribbean to the south. To the north lay hills, densely-forested and green. Rivers ran often to the sea, creating pleasant spots to swim between fresh and salt.
In Yaguanabo, we lunched light, then found a thumbing spot. We did not attempt to detain the man and wife who brought us to town, thinking their autocycle trishaw would not be travelling so far and anyway would be unable to accommodate us. They stopped nonetheless, demonstrated both we and the bikes could be squeezed in, and brought us in noise-wind style to town. They did not want to take payment, but we insisted, and they were clearly pleased with what we offered.
From the width of the streets and number of impressive buildings, Cienfuegos must have been quite something to see in its heyday.
